Renewed Dignity began with a personal question: what responsibility does a designer have for the things they put into the world? For Anker Bak, the answer was to begin close to home, using his skills to respond to needs he could see around him and to situations where design too often stopped at function.
Presented at Officinet in Copenhagen in 2022, Anker’s first solo exhibition placed furniture for ageing, illness and death inside the familiar setting of a home. Rather than separating assistive objects from everyday furniture, the exhibition gave them the same space, material attention and presence.
Renewed Dignity became an early declaration of the practice Anker wanted to build: design grounded in observation, care and responsibility, with room for parts of life often kept outside traditional furniture culture. It marked a shift from designing individual objects towards asking what design could contribute when people need it most.
