The Furniture We Need began with a gap Anker Bak could see between furniture and assistive furniture. Objects made for ageing or changing mobility were often designed around function alone, leaving little room for personality, tactility and the feeling of bringing something into your home that still feels like you.
Presented at Kulturtårnet during 3daysofdesign 2024, the exhibition placed Anker’s furniture alongside portraits and reflections from people living with disabilities. Across four floors, the journey moved from canes and mobility to ageing and death, ending with the coffin Ro at the top of the tower overlooking Copenhagen.
The exhibition argued for a broader category of furniture, where support can carry the same material care and cultural value as the objects we already choose to live with. The Furniture We Need made those missing objects visible, while giving space to people whose needs and experiences had too often remained outside the design conversation.
